What Makes The Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H Tough?
The Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H belongs to the Ultra Durable 5 Plus series that brings more features for a much tougher board compare to their previous version found in their Z68 and Z77 boards. Aside from the twice copper PCB, Gigabyte includes in this board the Durable Black Solid Caps that perfectly complimented the board color and improved its durability.
Another thing is the Gold plated CPU socket that provides better connectivity for maximum signal transfer with minimal loss. As you already know that the twice Copper PCB design of Gigabyte’s Ultra Durable series promotes better signal and it lowers the heat generated from the board components. You can also notice a better heatsink design on the GA-Z87X-UD3H that offers maximum cooling efficiency on the main components of the board.
Looking At The Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H Motherboard
The Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H motherboard looks awesome in all black design with grey and blue trim. There’s a beefy heatsink on top the voltage regulator circuit and the Z87 chipset, something that you’ll never expect from an entry level board but, Gigabyte doesn’t hesitate to put it there to deliver its maximum potential.
The CPU slot is very much spacey that will accommodate the oversize heatsink in case you’ll decide to overclock the system and replace a CPU water cooler. The power connectors are nicely place on the edge of the board for fast and neat connections, the 8-pin is located beside the voltage regulator circuitry and the 24-pins on back of the DIMM slots. It provides four DIMM slots with fine color coding for you to identify the right memory pairing, it supports up to 32GB of DDR3.
Beside the DIMM slots on the corner of the board you’ll find sets of button switches which are very handy when testing the board. There’s a power switch, reset and CMOS clear. It also includes the six 4-pin CPU fan header and the 3-pin system fan header with the POST code LED. You can see the Internal SuperSpeed USB 3.0 header and several voltage check points for VCore, VDIMM, VIOD, VRING, VAXG, VSA, VIOA, and VRIN.
Looking at the SATA ports you’ll notice six SATA 6GB/s in black provided by the native Z87 chip and the remaining two in grey are provided by the Marvell 88se9230 controller also in SATA 6GB/s. You can’t find any SATA 3GB/s in here in case you wonder, the board doesn’t include the obsolete slow moving SATA ports.
Going on the corner of SATA ports, you’ll notice the front panel pin-out that includes the power switch, reset switch, HHD LED, Power LED and the system speaker. Another internal SuperSpeed USB 3.0 header can be found with USB 2.0 port, COM port, 4-pin system fan, SPDIF out, SPDIF in and the front panel audio header.
Let’s take a look at the expansion slots, the Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H provides 3x PCIe x16 slots that support both 2-way SLI and 3-way CrossFireX. The first and second slot runs at single x16 or x8/x8 for dual and the third one configure only as x4. There are three PCIe x1 in between and a legacy PCI slot.
The Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H I/O panel provides generous number of ports so that you can never run out of them in case you’ll need any of them. Starting from the PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo, six USB 3.0 in blue, the board totally eliminates the usage of the older USB 2.0, RJ45 LAN port, six audio ports, two eSATA ports and an optical SPDIF out. Every possible video port are provided here so that you can maximize the benefit of any type of display you’ll going to need from D-Sub VGA port, DVI, HDMI and Display port.

Overclocking the Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H is easy using the Intel’s Haswell Core i7-4770K, you can choose manual OC by simply increasing the multiplier and the base clock frequency or hit the Turbo Boost that will gives you an instant 3.9GHz. It will automatically increase the multiplier up to x39 while the base clock remains at 100MHz (39 x 100MHz = 3.9GHz). At this point, the additional 400MHz to its speed yields a visible increase on its performance.
Another option which I find the most appropriate for me is to select the Extreme Settings. The maximum achievable frequency is 4.7GHz that runs with full stability. The temperature rise up to more than 70 degrees Celsius but it certainly bearable with the water cooling system we put.
The results were truly amazing for an entry level motherboard like the Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H. Its performance drastically increase and the smoothness it bring to Hitman Absolution, Tomb Raider and Battlefield 3 games are excellent, it scores well in CineBench with 10.3.
