The ASUS M5A99X Evo looks great in its traditional black and blue color combinations with some whites on the slots that perfectly complement its appearance. The layout is dead simple and clean for easy access, it provides enough space for oversize heatsink for the processor if you wish to overclock it.

The board is loaded with more overclocking possibilities such as 6+2 power phase that delivers a highly efficient supply to the CPU. The 990X chipset supports two full PCIe X16 for multiple graphics connections, these also gives you an options to split into two X8 links. It has a great advantage over the 970 chipset that limits them into a single PCIe 2.0 X16. There’s a third PCIe slot in black that provides an X4 link.

It provides good number of expansion slots even though the chipset occupy quite big space. There are three PCIe 16X in blue, black and white color, two PCIe 1X in blue and one legacy PCI slot. The board also features four DIMM slots that supports up to 32GB of RAM with 8GB maximum per slot.

Looking at the SATA ports, we can see eight of them in right angled position for easy quick access. Six of these in grey are provided by the SouthBridge chipset SB950 and an additional two using the JMicron controller. At the bottom edge of the board there’s an army of headers for front panel, audio, USB 2.0,FireWire, CMOS clear, serial COM ports and several fan headers.

On the back panel portion we can see a generous amount of ports for enthusiast grade board, there’s a PS/2 mouse and keyboard combo port, eight USB 2.0 ports and two USB 3.0, two SATA ports that includes power eSATA in green, digital optical audio port, FireWire, RJ45 LAN port and six analog audio ports.

The ASUS M5A99X Evo is full packed with features as always expected in all ASUS board. A Dual Intelligent Processor 2 with DIGI+ VRM, these are the TPU (TurboV Processing Unit) and EPU (Energy Processing Unit). It’s a digital programmable microprocessor that perfectly delivers power efficiency to the processor for optimum performance and stability.

The UEFI BIOS is undeniably the best out there when dealing with CMOS settings, this removes the pain with the traditional keyboard controlled operations. Upon entering the BIOS the first thing you can see an EZ mode page that most users settings applied, you can easily select the boot devices, lists of info about the system its basic setup.

For advanced users there’s an advances BIOS mode, this is very useful in voltage and clock settings for overclocking, not only that, it also offers the VRM and memory drive options and memory timing as well. The next tab is the Al Tweaker that offers access to the clock and voltage settings. The DRAM timings and drive options is another good thing from Al Tweaker if you wish to push its maximum performance.

The Monitor tabs gives the real-time temperature and voltage readings and more options for fan speed adjustments. Lastly, the Boot, Tools and Exit provides options that describes its name. The TurboV and DIGI+ VRM in nicely graphical interface are for voltages, clocks and VRM settings.

There’s the Fan Xpert that controls the ideal fan speed for a cooler operations and the Al Charger that allows you to charge faster with your iPhones, iPods and iPads.

Overclocking The ASUS M5A99X Evo

To find out how well the board performs, we set it into an overclocking mode using the older Phenom II X6 processor. As you already see, this board belongs to the mainstream level considering its price range, but surprisingly it surpasses our expectation it can compete with much expensive brands.

The maximum overclocked frequency is at 3.888GHz, starting from its 3.2GHz speed a nearly 700MHz gain is added. It didn’t stop there because the memory has also gains 2000MHz. The overall performance is also increased and fairly stable. It uses a lower CPU voltage with only 1.4v that proves to be a highly power efficient. These values are by far better than the M5A97 Evo version.


The ASUS M5A99X EVO is a solid performer that shows above average compare to other same price level board. The additional PCIe slot stands out from the rest that supports both SLI and CrossFireX multi GPU, something that unexpected in AMD chipset products and gamers should definitely happy for it.

The lowered power consumptions delivers an excellent efficiency in its overall performance, somewhat you can enjoy it that offers more while saving power and less heat during operations.
